The Burundi National Police has undergone significant transformation through the Model Police Project, established following a high-level Transforming Leadership and Governance Seminar (TLG Seminar) facilitated by the International Leadership Foundation (ILF) and the International Leadership University (ILU) Burundi.
The project was launched in November 2019 as part of the National Public Administration Reform Program, aiming to strengthen institutional capacity and promote integrity, professionalism, and community service within the Burundi National Police.
Prior to the project, the Burundi National Police faced challenges such as corruption, multiple checkpoints, and slow processing. To address these issues, the Burundi government established an implementation commission, conducted awareness campaigns and surveys, and reduced countryside checkpoints.
The project has yielded impressive results, including decreased corruption, improved online services, and enhanced relationships between police and citizens. A toll-free number (“413”) was also set up for reporting abuses.
With continued commitment and support, the Model Police Project is transforming the Burundi National Police, contributing to a more just and equitable society.
