In Togo, widows often face significant cultural obstacles when trying to inherit their late husband’s assets. But thanks to the International Leadership Foundation (ILF) and a Transformation Project dedicated to the issue, nine widows have already had their inheritance rights restored, with 30 more expected to benefit in the coming months.
The project began in November 2023 with an ILF Transforming Leadership & Governance seminar. After the seminar, a group of law professionals headed by a Supreme Court Judge formed a Transformation Project group to tackle the issue, setting three key objectives:
- Efficient Identity Card Issuance: Create a fast-track system for issuing identity cards to widows.
- Document Provision: Ensure widows have necessary documents, including birth certificates.
- Inheritance Protection: Safeguard widows’ rights according to Togolese law.
Through social networks, meetings, and radio broadcasts, the project raised awareness and gained support from local authorities. Despite facing intimidation and threats, the widows are now receiving assistance, with 13 already benefiting from the project.
One widow’s story stands out: after five years, her file was unblocked, and her son received his identity card in just days, ending a six-year wait.
The project’s impact extends beyond the widows, improving the lives of their children. With inheritance rights secured, mothers can provide for their children’s subsistence, education, and apprenticeships.
Initially planned for three months, the project will now run for a year, expanding to remote areas and ensuring fair processing of applications. This initiative is crucial for protecting and empowering Togolese widows, contributing to the nation’s development and reducing juvenile delinquency.
